OTC day 2 - A win!
Day 0 Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 The Aftermath
Day 2:
Its midnight and we just arrived in Willows, home of Thunderhill. I’m a day behind on the write ups so now will come the story of day 2 and tomorrow morning day 3 will be finished. Those of you on the UCSB SCC mailing list know the outcomes already, the rest of you will have to wait…
Day two begins with a short drive to Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the outside club course. The routine begins; unpack, driver’s meeting, change brake pads, check tires, prep for first run. At 9:55 Joel heads out for the first run of the day with me as passenger. Everything goes smoothly with the exception of Joel spinning the car. Spin count; Joel 1, Matt 0. Time wise, Joel comes in ahead of the Miata but a second slower than the 330i with times in the 1:38 region.
With the car back in we drain the oil catch can and top off the system. Ready to go again I head out on the track by myself. After a couple laps I begin to get the feel and the hotlapper seems to reflect this with times flashing up at 1:34 and even one at 1:33. With the checkered out, I head back in to the pits. Roger Foo was driving the 330i that session, he turns consistent 1:37s. My times are not only good enough for the class lead but my fastest lap is faster than anything turned in by anyone in touring 3, including Doug’s cheating bastard S2000. J
Over at the Yoong and Foo pits things heat up. We watch them proceed to strip the 330i to its basic essentials. Out comes the carpets, rear seats, passenger seat, roll bar, cat back exhaust, cd changer, door panels; basically anything to save weight. A couple hundred pounds later, Foo is ready to fight for the lead in session 3.
Session three: Joel heads out on the track by with Darren to get some run time in. I stay behind and watch the times. Foo is driving hard, pitching the 330 into the turns, and going sideways several times. But its not enough, he only manages to break into the 1:34s, still an amazing improvement from session 2, this competition is getting interesting. As for Joel, he comes in with the car refusing to boost, we eventually figure out that an injector connector on a secondary has come loose. Fixed, we begin to pack as we missed session 4. The Foo, Yoong team also skips the last session, preferring to get under way to Buttonwillow and day 3.
Notes: Mike and Eddie have decided to fix the Miata and have located an engine. If all goes well, we should meet up with them at Thunderhill.
